63 A man can see

Start the challenge by finding and reading a Bible verse from John 9:33.

If you had lived in Jesus’ time, what sort of things would you have heard him say?

What would you have seen Jesus do?

What would you have asked Jesus to do for you?

(Hint: you can ask him now!)

The story so far…

John 8:12 (CEV) tells us that Jesus said, “I am the light for the world! Follow me, and you won’t be walking in the dark. You will have the light that gives life.” For one man, that was about to come true in an amazing way!

Now read John 9:1–11 together.

What happened next…

Some of the Jewish leaders did not believe that Jesus could have done this. They asked the man’s parents if he had really been blind. Then they tried to get the man himself to speak against Jesus – but he would not. At last they left him alone – but they told him that he was not allowed to go to the Jewish meeting places again. Later, Jesus found the man who could now see him for the first time and he said, “Lord, I put my faith in you!”

Did you know…?

Beggar Medical care was very basic in Jesus’ time. Many people could not be cured. A blind person would not be able to work and would have to beg for money to buy food.

Siloam The pool was part of the water supply for Jerusalem, coming through a tunnel that was built by King Hezekiah, 2,700 years ago. It is still in use today!

Spit It was thought that spit or saliva could help in healing – but please don’t try making mud with saliva yourself, and definitely do not put it on anyone’s eyes!

Try it out

Draw four pairs of eyes:

  • Looking up
  • Looking down
  • Looking to one side
  • Looking forward

Look at each pair of eyes in turn and think about what you have heard in the Bible story.

  • Look up: remember what Jesus did for the blind man. Look up to Jesus and praise him.
  • Look down: keep your eyes open and you will be looking at yourself. What do you think about Jesus? The man who could see for the first time had no doubts about Jesus. Ask God to help you to recognise who he really is.
  • Look to the side: look at the world and people around you. Jesus saw that the blind man needed help. Pray for anyone you know who needs help from Jesus.
  • Look forward: look ahead to the future. The man who could see was going to have a totally different life: everything had changed for him. Even when others gave him a hard time, he was full of faith in Jesus. Pray about what you might be doing this week and the changes that you are facing.

Talk to God

Hold a piece of play dough or modelling clay and shape it into a letter of the alphabet. Talk to God about someone, something, or some place, beginning with that letter.
