The story so far…

Jesus and his friends were on a boat, crossing a large lake, when there was a terrible storm. Jesus was able to stop the storm, just by telling it to stop! They carried on across the lake and came safely to the shore.

Now read Mark 5:1–13 together.

What happened next…

When the people of the town saw that the man had been healed by Jesus, they were scared! They asked Jesus to leave. But the news soon spread because the man went to all the towns near by and amazed everyone by explaining what had happened to him.

Did you know…?

Graveyard When people died, natural caves or ones that had been cut from the rocky hillside were used as tombs or graves.

Evil spirits Sometimes Jesus met people whose lives were under the devil’s control. They seemed mad and could not control themselves. Jesus ordered the evil to leave these people (exorcism). Jesus showed that God’s power was far greater than the power of evil.

Lots The word that the man used as his name means a unit of a Roman army, called a “legion”. It was 6,000 men!

Try it out

Do you believe in spirits? Some people say that there are no such things. What do you think?

The Bible says these things about spirits:

  • The spiritual world (which we can’t see) is as real as the world we see around us.
  • Spirits are real. John 4:24 tells us God is Spirit.
  • There are good spirits and bad spirits.
  • The Holy Spirit (sometimes called the Holy Ghost) is God and is the greatest spirit of all.
  • When we have God’s Spirit in us, we don’t have to be afraid of evil spirits. God’s Spirit is much more powerful.
