91 God’s love

Start the challenge by finding and reading a Bible verse from 1 Corinthians 13:7.

How good are you at remembering really important things?

Do people ever tell you the same thing several times, just to make sure you’ve got the message?

What do you think is the “greatest” thing for followers of God?

The letter so far…

Paul had started the church at Corinth on one of his missionary journeys. After he left, the church had continued to grow, but they had some problems and questions. So Paul wrote to them to help them. He told them that more than anything else they needed to know, and show, God’s love.

Now read 1 Corinthians 13:1–13 together.

What happened next…

Paul had lots of other things to say to the Corinthian Christians about living for God. But learning to love is the best way of getting to know God and understanding his love for us.

Did you know…?

Corinth This city was in southern Greece and was a seaport.

First letter to Corinth? In our Bibles, this letter is headed “1 Corinthians” but it was not the first letter that Paul wrote to the church. Read chapter 5, verse 9 to see that Paul had already written to them. And in chapter 7, verse 1 the church writes to Paul. 1 Corinthians is Paul’s answer to their letter.

From Paul This is a letter that Paul signed himself. Look at 1 Corinthians 16:21–24.

Try it out

Make heart-shaped biscuits to give to people you love!

Make sure your hands and all working surfaces are clean before you start. Ask an adult to help with using the oven. If you have a food allergy, check that the ingredients are safe for both of you to use and eat.

You will need:

200 g self-raising flour

100 g caster sugar

100 g margarine

1 beaten egg

A squeeze of lemon juice

100-150 g crushed red boiled sweets (Put the sweets in a polythene bag, cover with a cloth and bash them with a rolling pin.)

Baking tray

Oiled greaseproof paper

Rolling pin

Mixing bowl

Round cutter

Small heart-shaped cutter (smaller than the round one)

Preheat the oven to 180 °C or gas mark 4.

1 Mix the flour and sugar together. Rub in the margarine.

2 Add the egg and lemon juice and mix to a stiff dough.

3 Knead the dough well. Roll it out to about 3-5 mm thick.

4 Cut the dough into circles; then cut a heart-shape from the centre of each circle. Roll out the spare dough again, until all is used.

5 Put the oiled paper on the baking tray to prevent the biscuits sticking. Place the shapes on the paper. Fill the heart-shaped centre hole with crushed sweets.

6 Bake for about 15 minutes. Let the biscuits cool and then peel the paper off.

Give the biscuits to someone you love – and tell them why you are giving the biscuits to them!

Talk to God

Read verses 4–8a, replacing the word “love” with your own name. What does that sound like? Do you like what you hear? How does it make you feel? Turn your thoughts into prayers as you talk to God now.
