72 Peter helps a man

Start the challenge by finding and reading a Bible verse from Acts 4:10.

Do you have a list of things you would like to be given for your birthday or Christmas? Or are you saving up to buy a toy or something for a hobby or a computer game?

Can you think of a present you’ve been given? When you opened it, did you say, “That’s just what I wanted!” or “I’ve always wanted this!”?

What if you opened the present and it was much, much better than anything you were expecting? What would you say then?

The story so far…

Jesus had sent his Holy Spirit to his followers and they were like different people! Peter gave a great speech about Jesus and thousands of people had heard and believed what he said. Jesus’ followers shared what they had. They gave their money to whoever needed it and, every day, they met in the Temple in Jerusalem to praise God together.

Now read Acts 3:1–10 together.

What happened next…

A crowd formed when they saw what had happened and Peter talked to them about Jesus. He and John were put in prison for speaking about the power of Jesus. The people who had arrested them did not know what to do next. They could not deny that the man had been healed. So they let Peter and John go – and warned them not to speak about Jesus again. But they and all the other followers spoke more bravely than before!

Did you know…?

Temple This was not the Temple that Solomon built. That had been destroyed when God’s people were taken away to Babylon (see Challenge 8). Building this temple had started about 50 years before this story.

Beautiful Gate The new Temple was built on a huge platform, set into a hill. The Beautiful Gate was one of the entrances to the “inner court” where only Jews were allowed to go.

Begging The man in this story had never been able to walk. He would not have been able to work or earn a living and there was no official way of helping poor people. So he had to ask other people for money and was taken to the Temple at one of the busiest times of day.

Try it out

The lame man was healed in the name of Jesus! He had never been able to walk, so there were all sorts of things that he could do now that he had never been able to do before. Can you think of ten things he might have done? Here are two to start your list, from verse 8:

1 He jumped up

2 He started walking

Can you think of other things he might have done? What would you have done if you were the lame man? How do you think he would have felt? Whom did he praise – and why?
