The story so far…

Paul started out on another long journey, this time with Silas and a young man called Timothy. Things did not go quite as Paul had planned and they were not able to go to some of places they had planned to visit. Then Paul had a vision of a man asking him to visit his country and spread the news of Jesus there. They set off as quickly as they could for the city of Philippi.

Now read Acts 16:6–15 together.

What happened next…

Paul and Silas got into trouble and were put in prison. In the night, while they were singing and praying to God, there was an earthquake and the prison doors fell off. They did not try to escape but they told the man in charge of the prison about Jesus – and he became a Christian! Next day, they were let out of prison and they continued their journey telling people about Jesus everywhere they went.

Did you know…?

Philippi This was a city in northern Greece and it was a Roman colony. The first Christian church in Europe was formed there and later, when Paul was in prison, he wrote to the church.

By the river When he went to a new town, Paul always went to the local Jewish meeting place or synagogue. In Philippi, the followers of God were not in a building, but the riverside was still a regular meeting place.

Purple cloth This was worn as a sign of royalty and wealth. The dye was expensive to produce as it was extracted from sea snails.

Try it out

On his journey, Paul and Silas met a young man called Timothy, who joined them. Then, when they went to Philippi, they met Lydia.

Use the information in the Bible passage to complete “person profiles” of Lydia and Timothy (look at Acts 16:1-3 as well).
